A phone as the tracker

Any phone can be the tracker, with our app or with Traccar Client, before you buy hardware.

The LemursEye app does this properly: press Start, it sends a position every 10 seconds, press End and the trip is recorded. See The LemursEye app as a tracker, which is the recommended route.

The rest of this page covers the alternative: the free Traccar Client app, which speaks the OsmAnd protocol the bridge accepts on port 5055. It is useful for a quick test on an iPhone, which the LemursEye app does not cover yet.

Set up the app

  1. Install Traccar Client from the Play Store or App Store.
  2. Device identifier: any number you choose, for example 69353530. This is the "IMEI" you will register in the console.
  3. Server URL: http://gps.lemurseye.com:5055 (the public tracker endpoint).
  4. Frequency: 10 seconds while testing. Phones throttle background apps, so expect gaps when the screen is off.
  5. Start the service.

Register it in the console

In Fleet, register a tracker with the same identifier, protocol Phone app (OsmAnd), and assign it to a vehicle. Positions appear on Live within seconds.

What a phone cannot do

  • No ignition signal, so idle time is not counted: engine-on idle needs a wired tracker.
  • GPS scatter indoors and in narrow streets is much worse than a roof antenna; expect short "trips" of a few metres when standing still under a roof. The stop radius in Settings absorbs some of this.
  • Reporting stops when the OS kills the app.

For anything beyond a test, use a hardware tracker.
