Installation

Before you start

For installers. What a LemursEye installation is, what to bring, and what to check before touching the vehicle.

This section is for the person fitting the tracker. If you already install trackers for other platforms, nothing here is unusual. The parts that matter most to LemursEye are the ignition wire and the handover test, because they decide whether the fleet owner sees real trips and real costs.

The job, in short

  1. Hide the tracker where it gets a GPS signal: Placement.
  2. Connect three wires: constant power through a fuse, ground, ignition: Wiring.
  3. Optional extras: engine cut-off relay, door sensor, panic button.
  4. Configure the tracker to talk to gps.lemurseye.com (its model's setup guide), or check it was configured beforehand.
  5. Run the handover test with the fleet owner or LemursEye, and fill in the installation record.

Time: 30 to 60 minutes for a hardwired tracker, more with a relay or sensors. An OBD plug-in takes a minute.

Check the vehicle first

  • Start the vehicle and look at the dashboard. Photograph any warning lights that are already on, so nobody blames the installation for them later.
  • Find the voltage: cars are 12 V; trucks, buses and most machines are 24 V. Check the tracker and any relay are rated for it.
  • Ask where not to work: some vehicles are under warranty, some have alarms or immobilisers already fitted. Do not cut into another system's wiring.
  • Airbags: never place or route anything near airbag modules, their yellow connectors or their wiring.
  • Modern vehicles with sensitive electronics: follow the vehicle maker's guidance on disconnecting the battery before working on wiring.

What you need from the fleet owner

  • The vehicle list: plate number for each vehicle that gets a tracker.
  • One tracker and one data SIM per vehicle (data plan, credit, PIN code removed).
  • Whether each vehicle needs engine cut-off, a door sensor or a panic button.
  • Someone who can turn the key and drive the vehicle around the block for the test.

Ground rules

  • Never twist-and-tape a connection. Crimp it with a proper connector, or solder it and cover it with heat-shrink.
  • Fuse the power wire close to where you take the power from.
  • Do not take power or ignition from the airbag, ABS or engine computer circuits.
  • Leave the vehicle as you found it: every panel back, no loose wires, no rattles.
