SIM card and APN by country

The data APN a tracker needs in 20 countries, and how to read it from any SIM.

A tracker sends its positions over the SIM's mobile data, so it needs the carrier's APN (the name of the data gateway). The setup commands on the GT06, Teltonika and SinoTrack pages all take it.

The surest way: ask the SIM itself

Put the same SIM in an Android phone and open Settings > Mobile networks > Access Point Names. The selected entry's APN field (and its username and password, if any) is what the tracker needs. This works for any carrier in any country, including business and IoT (M2M) SIMs, whose APN is often private.

Common APNs

Collected from carrier pages and public guides; carriers change them, and business and IoT plans often use their own. Confirm in a phone before an installation day. "—" means no username or password.

When the APN needs a username and password

Some carriers (for example in Iraq, Pakistan, Spain, Brazil and Mexico) ask for a login with the APN. Send it with the APN:

# GT06
APN,internet.itelcel.com,webgprs,webgprs2002#
# Teltonika
  setparam 2001:internet.itelcel.com;2002:webgprs;2003:webgprs2002

(SinoTrack: see the unit's manual; the 803 command takes the APN only on most firmwares.)

Before you install

  • Data must be on, with credit or a data bundle; a tracker uses roughly 20 to 60 MB a month at a 10-second interval.
  • SMS must work on the SIM: GT06 and SinoTrack units are configured by SMS.
  • Buy 4G trackers. 2G and 3G are switched off or shrinking in many countries, including much of the Gulf and Europe; a 2G-only unit may never connect.
  • Use a local SIM where the vehicle drives: a SIM from another country roams, which is expensive and often blocked for data.
