The LemursEye app as a tracker

Turn a phone into the tracker: press Start, a position goes to the server every 10 seconds, press End and the trip is recorded.

The LemursEye Android app can be the tracking device itself. It is the fastest way to record real trips, and the right answer whenever the thing you need to follow is a person rather than a vehicle: a delivery rider, a medical representative, a technician on a round.

Download: EaglesEye-latest.apk. Android will ask once for permission to install an app from outside the store.

How it works

  1. Open Tracker, the first tab.
  2. Note the Device ID shown there. Register it once in the console under Fleet → Register tracker, protocol Phone app, then assign it to a vehicle or a person's vehicle record.
  3. Press Start trip when the journey begins. Allow location when asked, and choose Allow all the time if Android offers it.
  4. A position is sent every 10 seconds while the trip runs. A notification stays in the tray; the screen can be locked and the phone can be in a pocket.
  5. Press End trip when the journey finishes. The trip closes on the server at that moment.

Nothing is sent between End and the next Start. That is the point of the buttons: the person is tracked while working, not afterwards.

What the screen tells you

ReadingMeaning
ElapsedHow long the current trip has been running
DistanceMeasured on the phone, from the fixes themselves
Fixes sentHow many positions the server has accepted
Waiting to sendPositions held because the network is down; they go as soon as it returns
Last positionThe coordinates and their accuracy, with the time of the fix

Offline, and being killed

A failed send is queued on the phone's own storage and retried oldest first, so a tunnel, a dead zone or a flight-mode moment only delays the points. If Android kills the app during a trip, reopening it resumes the same trip and sends what it kept.

Accuracy, honestly

A phone is not a wired tracker. It has no ignition wire, its GPS scatters indoors and between tall buildings, and Android will throttle any app that is not a foreground service. This app runs as a foreground service precisely to avoid that, but battery saver modes on some phones (Xiaomi, Oppo, Samsung) can still stop it: allow the app to run in the background in the phone's battery settings.

For a vehicle that runs every day, a wired tracker is still the better instrument. For a person, the phone is the only practical one.

Where the data goes

Positions travel over https to the server, into the same bridge every hardware tracker uses, and from there into the same pipeline: the live map, trips, history and the daily digest treat an app-tracked journey exactly like any other.
